OUR APPROACH

For 300 years, the Slater family has farmed along Goose Creek in Virginia, mostly growing cereal crops and beef cattle. In 2010, we added grapevines to that farming tradition.

We grow 13 acres of vines on site, on two different vineyard sites on our farm. Varietals include: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Sauvignon Blanc.

Our Winemaker, Katell Griaud, grew up on her family’s wine property Château Kalian in France. She brings expertise and a decidedly Old-World style to our wines, which range from Sparkling Rosé to age-worthy red blends cellared in French oak.

In addition, Slater Run appreciates the innovation an emerging wine region like Virginia allows, so we also explore unconventional techniques like a No Sulfites added Merlot and an orange Viognier fermented on skins.

We approach each vintage with respect to the growing season, trusting Katell’s guidance on how to extract the best the fruit has to offer while striving for an elegant balance.

Single Varietal Wines

We produced our first vintage in 2014, including Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Rosé, and Cabernet Franc.

These wines fall into our line of everyday table wines. They are all denoted by a watercolor feather on the label, designed by local artist Holly Bimba.

These wines are approachable, easy drinking wines meant to be consumed now or in the near future.This line has been expanded to include Sauvignon Blanc and our Reserve line of single varietal wines that are aged in French oak barrels and are age-worthy for 5 to 7 years.

BORDEAUX BLENDS

We produced two Bordeaux blends during our 2014 vintage: “Roots” and “First Bridge.” Age-worthy for 10 or more years and representing the highest quality fruit in our vineyards, they feature historic family photos on their labels.

In addition, we started producing a single barrel wine called “The Pit Jumper” in 2015, which calls on another local artist Bill Rock’s original artwork for its label.

ALT CELLAR

In 2017, we decided to expand our line-up by experimenting with SO2 free winemaking methods, producing a duo of Merlot: one made with SO2 additions, and one made without. This alternative (“Alt”) line of wine is something we will continue in the future, and in 2018 we produced a small batch of “pét-nat” under the “Alt” label. Again, a local artist, Melanie Wentworth, was commissioned for label artwork for our Pét-Nat label.
