Somm Sunday: Reds of Germany & Austria
Led by Sommelier Sara Gann, this guided tasting class will take you through a curated selection of five red wines from Germany and Austria. Despite the fact Germany and Austria are far better known for white wines than for red wines, this has no bearing on the quality of the latter, which can be extremely high. The main reason that so few people outside Germany and Austria are aware of the red wines produced there is because most of these are consumed domestically—they never make it out of their respective countries!
German reds, grown in mainly cool climate areas, feature bright acidity, lighter body and lower alcohol than warm-climate peers. Austrian reds can have a bit more body, as there are warmer growing areas in the eastern part of the country. Most quality wines are vinified dry (trocken) to highlight the pure fruit, though off-dry reds (feinherb) are also made. We’ll sample some of Germany’s greatest red wine hits, including Spatburgunder (Pinot Noir), Schwarzriesling (Pinot Meunier), and Dornfelder, as well as two classic red wines from Austria: Blaufrankisch (Lemberger) and a Gemischter Satz blend from Vienna, accompanied by some tasty snacks.
It’s the perfect way to deepen your wine knowledge in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Don’t miss out—seating is limited, so secure your spot today!
